Within the scope of the symposium “CO2-free, sustainable Steel-production and Hydrogen-technology” the state of development of hydrogen-smelting-plasma-reduction was presented at the Montanuniversität Leoben on the 5th of February 2020. With this reduction technology it is possible to produce steel directly form it’s ore without any intermediate stage. Therefore it is an alternative to the common production route with blast furnace and BOF or the direct reduction with natural gas and EAF.
Additionally, the stage of development of the new PEM-electrolysis to produce hydrogen was presented. Finally the participants learned more about hydrogen and its role as a future energy source.
The organization of the symposium was part of the project “SuSteel”, which has been funded by the FFG (Forschungsförderungsgesellschaft) in cooperation with the Montanuniversität Leoben, K1-MET and Voestalpine.
