As a welcome change from the daily university routine, an excursion to voestalpine Stahl Linz was on the agenda during the laboratory exercises on “Steel Metallurgy – Processes”. The students were given exclusive insights into the field of reduction metallurgy, with the focus on the following areas:
– Coke plant
– Sintering plant
– R&D Technology centre
– Blast Furnace
On the one hand, the individual process steps were explained in detail by the employees of the respective aggregates, and, on the other hand, the students had the opportunity to see the plants at close range. A special highlight was the tapping of the blast furnace and the coke quenching process.
The day was rounded off with a joint dinner in the guest house, where the students took the opportunity to ask further questions of the people in charge of the individual processes and to exchange ideas about possibilities for future master’s theses.
Finally, we would like to thank DI Dr. mont. Christoph Thaler and his colleagues for the great programme and hospitality during our stay.
