The Metallurgy Department of the University of Leoben invited 14 school students from all over Austria to the annual MetalDays in Leoben from July 5 to 8, 2021.

MetalDays 2021 is already the 12th edition of an information event where students aged 16 and older are invited to MUL for four days. During this time, participants will experience the field of study up close – the various specializations in metallurgy will be presented on a day-by-day basis. From ferrous metallurgy, nonferrous metallurgy, metal forming, casting research and simulation and modeling – each department presentation is combined with active stations, laboratory or workshop visits and active discussion rounds.

The students are not only allowed to melt their own metals, they also learn which current research projects are in focus and why their studies make an important contribution to a sustainable future.

The MetalDays are rounded off with a varied leisure program: After the adventure event “Adventure Erzberg”, including a haulage tour and an exhibition mine, the students had the opportunity to talk to metallurgy graduates. The penultimate day was rounded off with a visit to a local museum.

After four days, the participants left Leoben not only with new friendships, but also with many new impressions. Both of the University of Leoben, the study of metallurgy, the city of Leoben and the career opportunities.

“The whole Metallurgy has struggled to hold MetalDays with great support from our industry sponsors. After more than a year of online teaching and mostly digitally held information sessions, it was liberating for everyone involved to be able to mentor and inspire young, curious and motivated students with us again.” – Ao.Univ.Prof. Dr. Christian Bernhard, Chair of Ferrous Metallurgy

To ensure everyone’s safety, there is still good news for late comers! Due to the reduced group size, MetalDays 2021 will take place a second time: August 23-26, 2021! Applications for the last available spots are open at https://www.metaldays.at/! Participation in MetalDays is free of charge – financially made possible by a large number of sponsors from the metallurgical industry in Austria and Germany.
