From august 21st until august 23rd 2025 Prof. Susanne Michelic and two PhD students, Nikolaus Preisser and Bernhard Sammer, of the Chair of Ferrous Metallurgy visited the International Conference on Secondary Refining & Inclusion Control (SRIC) in Xi’an, China. The conference served as a platform to discuss the latest developments, challenges, and innovations in secondary refining technologies, which are critical for improving the quality of steel. Topics covered included advancements in ladle metallurgy, inclusion control techniques, desulfurization, degassing, and the role of advanced materials in refining processes. The event also highlighted the importance of sustainability in steel production, with discussions on reducing energy consumption and minimizing environmental impact. Prof. Susanne Michelic, also member of the conference committee, gave a plenary talk with the title: “Advances in inclusion metallurgy based on fundamental studies of interactions in the system steel-slag-refractory”. Nikolaus Preisser and Bernhard Sammer also contributed to the conference by giving presentations titled “Investigation of change in NMI-landscape during experimental alkali-element containing slag treatment of steel” and “Optimizing automated SEM/EDS analysis for accurate nitride typification in non-oriented electrical steel”.

Before the conference in Xi’an, the trip to China also included a visit to the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB), a leading institution renowned for its focus on engineering, materials science, and environmental studies. Besides a guest lecture given by Prof. Susanne Mchelic, guest professor at USTB, the visit at USTB included a campus tour, showcasing their state-of-the-art laboratories and research facilities.

We would like to congratulate and thank to Dr. Yang He and Prof. Jianhua Liu from USTB for the amazing organization of the SRIC conference and their warm hospitality.
