A delegation from the Chair of Ferrous Metallurgy, Technical University of Leoben took part in the 9th International Congress on the Science and Technology of Steelmaking held in Seoul, South Korea.
The conference brought together leading experts from academia and industry to discuss the latest advancements in steelmaking technologies, sustainability, and digital transformation in metallurgical processes.

Following the theme of the conference “Towards greener and smarter steelmaking technologies”, the delegation contributed a total of two keynote lectures, held by Prof. Susanne Michelic and Prof. Christian Bernhard, and five presentations:

Latest Developments in Tracing Techniques to Study the Behavior of Non-metallic Inclusions
Susanne Michelic

Tramp Elements in Casting and Processing: A Future Challenge for the Scrap-Based Production of High-Quality Green Steel in Europe?
Christian Bernhard

Optimizing Process Parameters to Reduce Transverse Halfway Cracks in Continuous Casting: Experiment, Modeling, and Caster Data Analysis
Michael Bernhard

Influence of Tramp Elements and Accelerated Cooling on the Intergranular Crack Formation during Continuous Slab Casting of Steel
Robert Littringer

Kathrin Thiele

The visit also included valuable discussions with international partners, fostering new opportunities for collaboration and knowledge exchange.
Participation in ICS 2025 reflects the Chair’s ongoing commitment to international engagement and cutting-edge research in the field of ferrous
metallurgy.

Before and after the conference, our researchers visited the CleanSteelLaboratory at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), one of the most renowned institutions in the field of materials science and metallurgy.
We appreciated the warm welcome and the opportunity to exchange ideas.

Thank you Prof. Youn-Bae KANG and your team for offering us a closer look at your research.
